Major Postgraduate Scholarship Schemes

Postgraduate and doctoral applicants have access to higher scholarship allowances and living stipends than undergraduate applicants.

Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)

Full coverage including a 100% tuition waiver, free university accommodation, medical insurance and a monthly living stipend.

ANSO Scholarship (Chinese Academy of Sciences / UCAS)

For Master's and Ph.D. candidates in STEM disciplines. Covers full tuition, health insurance, a travel allowance and a competitive monthly research stipend.

Provincial & City Government Scholarships

Including the Shanghai Government Scholarship, Jiangsu Provincial Scholarship and Zhejiang Provincial Scholarship. Typically a full tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend of ¥2,500 – ¥3,500 RMB.

University Presidential & Lab Assistantship Funds

Direct funding from host professors and individual university departments, covering research fees and living expenses.

Scholarship decisions rest entirely with the awarding body. We strengthen your application and nominate you where you are genuinely competitive, we do not promise outcomes we cannot control.

Intakes & Application Timelines

Postgraduate timelines run earlier than undergraduate ones, because supervisor contact must happen before the application opens.

Autumn Intake (Primary)

Classes begin in September. Scholarship applications generally run from December to April.

Spring Intake (Secondary)

Classes begin in March. Only a small number of programmes accept spring postgraduate applicants.

Begin contacting potential supervisors 6 to 9 months before your intended intake. By the time CSC applications open, competitive candidates already have a supervisor's acceptance in hand.

Student Visa for Bachelor's Students

Undergraduate students studying in China for longer than 180 days apply for the

Student Visa for Postgraduate Students

Master's and Ph.D. students apply for the X1 Study Visa, which covers academic programmes exceeding 180 days. X1 holders must convert to a residence permit within 30 days of arriving in China.

Your application requires the JW201 or JW202 form, issued by your university once admission and funding are confirmed. Scholarship students are generally issued the JW201. We obtain the correct form on your behalf and guide you through embassy submission.

How Long Does the Process Take?

The student visa is typically issued within 7–15 working days of submission. The full postgraduate journey, however, runs considerably longer than undergraduate admission, supervisor correspondence alone can take two to three months before an application is even submitted. Allow 6 to 9 months from first supervisor contact to departure, particularly if you are applying for CSC funding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions postgraduate applicants ask us most often.
Do I need a supervisor before applying?
For a Ph.D., effectively yes, most universities will not process a doctoral application without a supervisor’s acceptance letter. For a Master’s it is not always mandatory, but it substantially strengthens your file and your scholarship prospects.
Many are. CSC and ANSO scholarships cover tuition, accommodation, insurance and a monthly stipend. Competition is real, but postgraduate funding in China is considerably more accessible than in most Western countries.
It is the most important document you will submit. Supervisors read it to decide whether your interests genuinely overlap with their lab’s work. A generic proposal is the most common reason strong candidates get overlooked.
Sometimes, particularly where your work experience or research output bridges the gap. It depends on the department and the supervisor. Bring your documents to a consultation and we will assess it honestly.
Generally under 35 for Master’s applicants and under 40 for Ph.D. applicants, though individual universities and scholarship schemes set their own limits.
Most postgraduate research programmes in STEM and business are available in English. Chinese-taught tracks require HSK Level 5 or 6. Learning Mandarin remains valuable for daily life and for collaboration within your lab.
Accompanying family members apply separately, usually on an S1 or S2 visa, once you hold a residence permit. Scholarship stipends are calculated for a single student, so plan the finances carefully before making that decision.
