Major Types of Scholarships in China

Five funding routes, each with different eligibility, competition levels and application channels.

General Eligibility

Baseline criteria across most awards

  • Non-Chinese citizen holding a valid passport, in good physical and mental health
  • Bachelor's applicants: usually under 25 years
  • Master's applicants: usually under 35 years
  • Ph.D. applicants: usually under 40 years
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 / 4.0, or an 80% equivalent

Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)

The flagship programme, offered by the China Scholarship Council on behalf of the Ministry of Education.

CSC Type A, Bilateral Program

Applied through the Chinese Embassy or a designated nominating agency in your home country, such as HEC or your Ministry of Education.

CSC Type B, University Postgraduate Program

Applied directly to partner Chinese universities, primarily for Master's and Ph.D. candidates.

Coverage (both types)

100% tuition waiver, free on-campus housing or an accommodation allowance, and comprehensive medical insurance.

Monthly Living Stipend

Bachelor's: ¥2,500 RMB. Master's: ¥3,000 RMB. Ph.D.: ¥3,500 RMB.

Type A and Type B have separate deadlines and separate application portals. Applying through the wrong channel is one of the most common and most costly mistakes applicants make.

Provincial & Municipal Government Scholarships

Regional governments fund international students at local universities. These are consistently less competitive than CSC and consistently overlooked by applicants

Note: If CSC is out of reach for your profile, provincial awards are usually the strongest realistic alternative, and applying for both costs you nothing but preparation time.

Other Scholarship Schemes

University, Language & Specialised Scholarships

Beyond government funding, several routes are faster to apply for and less competitive.

University Presidential / Merit Scholarships

Direct merit-based awards from individual universities, usually banded as Class A (full tuition plus lodging), Class B (full tuition) and Class C (50% tuition waiver). Less competitive than CSC, with noticeably faster response times.

International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (CLEC)

For students and educators studying Chinese language or International Chinese Language Education. Available for four weeks, one semester, one year, or a full Master's degree. Covers full tuition, accommodation, health insurance and a stipend of ¥2,500 RMB per month.

ANSO Scholarship

For STEM research students at Master's and Ph.D. level, studying at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) or USTC.

Belt and Road Scholarships

Dedicated funding pools for students from participating Silk Road nations.

Application Timeline

The scholarship year runs roughly ten months from first preparation to campus registration. Working backwards from September, here is where you should be

November – December

Prepare application documents, shortlist universities, and begin contacting prospective Master's and Ph.D. supervisors.

January – March

CSC Type A and Type B online application portals open.

April – May

University-level internal evaluations and interviews take place.

June – July

Final scholarship results are announced, and admission notices with JW201 or JW202 visa forms are issued.

Processing Duration

How Long Does the Process Take?

From first document preparation to campus registration, a scholarship application typically spans eight to ten months. Results are announced between June and July for the September intake, and the student visa itself is issued within 7–15 working days of submission. The stage most applicants underestimate is the beginning, supervisor correspondence and document attestation alone can take two to three months before an application is submitted at all.

Can you guarantee I will get a scholarship?
No, and you should be cautious of anyone who says otherwise. Scholarship decisions rest entirely with the awarding committee. What we can do is assess your profile honestly, apply where you are competitive, and make sure your file is not rejected on technical grounds.
Type A is applied for through the Chinese Embassy or a nominating agency in your home country. Type B is applied for directly to a partner Chinese university and is aimed at Master’s and Ph.D. candidates. They have separate deadlines and portals, and applying through the wrong one is a common and costly error.
Partial university scholarships and provincial awards are available. Fully funded CSC coverage at undergraduate medical level is limited and highly competitive. We will tell you plainly where you stand rather than encouraging an application with no realistic prospect.
It depends on the programme. English-taught programmes generally require IELTS, TOEFL or a medium of instruction certificate. Chinese-taught programmes require HSK, typically Level 4 for undergraduate and Level 5 or above for postgraduate study.
Yes, and you should. CSC, provincial and university schemes maintain separate quotas and separate committees. Applying broadly is the most reliable way to improve your odds.
Provincial and university scholarships often apply more flexible criteria than CSC, and strong research output, work experience or a compelling study plan can offset a weaker transcript. Bring your documents to a consultation and we will give you a realistic assessment.
For a September intake, begin in November of the previous year. Postgraduate applicants contacting supervisors should start earlier still. By the time portals open in January, competitive candidates already have their documents attested and their study plan drafted.
